Free printable expanded form worksheets. Write four-digit numbers as the sum of their place values, with an answer key.
Every question gives a number and asks for it written as the sum of its place values: 4,321 becomes 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 1. The answer line runs the width of the page, because an expanded five-digit number is longer than the question that asked for it.
Numbers containing a zero turn up as they naturally would, and they are the interesting ones: 4,302 is 4,000 + 300 + 2, with nothing written for the empty tens column. Students who write 4,000 + 300 + 0 + 2 have the idea but not the convention.
