Fraction Card Game
Fraction Line-Up is a game for two to four players about putting fractions in order. A 0 card and a 1 card lie at the ends of a line, and players take turns placing fraction cards between them, each one bigger than everything to its left and smaller than everything to its right.
Equal fractions stack: 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 all go on top of 1/2. Every card has a fraction bar of the same length, so when someone thinks a card is out of place, the players lay the bars one under the other and look.
Print the PDF: the rules are on the first page and the 38 cards follow, eight to a sheet, with halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths.
Frequently asked questions
How do you know which fraction is bigger?
Compare equal-sized wholes. With the same denominator, more parts is more: 3/8 is more than 1/8. With the same numerator, smaller parts make less: 1/6 is less than 1/4. Otherwise lay the bars side by side, or compare each fraction with 1/2.
Which fractions are equal in the deck?
1/2, 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 are equal, and so are 1/3 and 2/6, 2/3 and 4/6, 1/4 and 2/8, and 3/4 and 6/8. In the game an equal card goes on top of the one already there.
Is there an easier version?
Take out the thirds and sixths and play with halves, fourths and eighths. Every fourth is two eighths, so it is easier to see how the cards fit together.
