Make Ten Card Game

Make Ten Catch is a card game for two to four children who are learning the pairs of numbers that make 10. Eight cards lie face up in a pond, and on your turn you catch any two that add up to 10, saying the fact out loud as you take them.

Every card shows its number on a ten-frame as well as a numeral, so a child who doesn't know the fact yet can count the empty boxes to find the partner they need. The 40-card deck pairs off exactly, so every game ends with every card caught.

Print the PDF: the rules are on the first page and the cards follow, eight to a sheet with dashed lines to cut along. Card stock works best, so the numbers don't show through.

Frequently asked questions

Which pairs make 10 in this game?

1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5, and 0 and 10. The deck has four of each number from 1 to 9 and two each of 0 and 10, so every card has a partner.

How do the ten-frames help?

A ten-frame is a row of ten boxes, five on top and five below, with one dot for each unit. The empty boxes on a card show what it needs to make 10: a 7 has three empty boxes, so its partner is 3.

How can I make Make Ten Catch harder?

Let players catch three cards that make 10 as well as two, such as 2, 3 and 5 or 1, 4 and 5. Children start looking for sums inside sums, which is the start of adding three numbers.
