Subtraction Quiz
Subtraction usually trails addition by a year or more, and not because it is harder to understand — it is the recall that lags. A child who answers 7 + 8 instantly can still count on their fingers for 15 − 8, which is the same fact turned around. This quiz drills those single-digit facts, both numbers from 1 to 9 by default, until the reverse direction is as quick as the forward one.
Each problem replaces the last as soon as you press Enter, so the rhythm never breaks. A three-second countdown gives you the first question before timing begins. Submitting shows whether you were right and what the answer was, but the next problem is already waiting, so reading it costs nothing.
Run it for 30 seconds up to three minutes, or pick untimed and finish when you choose. Best scores are kept per length on this device, and anything you got wrong is listed afterwards, ready to print as a practice sheet of just those facts.
Frequently asked questions
Which subtraction facts come up?
Single-digit facts by default, with both numbers drawn from 1 to 9, so the answers never go negative. Open “Change what to practise” to widen the range on either side.
Why does subtraction lag behind addition?
Because it is usually learned as a separate skill rather than as addition reversed. Children who know 8 + 5 = 13 often still count down for 13 − 5. Drilling subtraction on its own, against a clock, is what closes the gap — and the fact families are already there to build on.
Is there a version without a timer?
Yes. Choose the untimed option and there is no clock anywhere — just a running score and a Finish button you press when you have had enough. Some children do noticeably better without a countdown, and it is the same set of facts either way.
What happens to the facts I get wrong?
They are listed at the end with the correct answers, and they are remembered between runs on this device. A button under the results prints a worksheet built from only those facts, so practice goes where it is needed instead of over the whole table again.
