Two kinds of problem, alternating down the page. Half are one-step equations to solve - x + 7 = 12, c - 5 = 4, 3c = 24, m ÷ 5 = 3 - and half give the variable a value and ask for what the expression comes to: n = 9, then 4n ÷ 4. Both are the sixth-grade Expressions and Equations work, and both are on the sheet because they are the same idea approached from two sides.

These are deliberately beginning algebra. Every answer is a whole number, nothing on the page is negative, every division comes out even, and no equation takes more than one step to undo. Largest number sets how big the values get - 10 and 12 are for a first week, 20 and 50 once the arithmetic is not the hard part any more. The operator buttons decide which operations the equations use, so a multiplication-only sheet is all 6a = 42.

What grade is this for?

Sixth grade, and a strong fifth grader. It is the first algebra a student meets: a letter standing for one number that can be worked out, rather than an unknown that has to be manipulated.

Are there negative numbers or two-step equations?

No. Nothing here goes below zero and no equation needs two steps - that is seventh-grade work, and putting it on the same sheet as x + 7 = 12 helps nobody. These pages stop where one-step whole-number algebra stops.

How is this different from the missing number worksheets?

34 + ___ = 61 asks a student to complete an arithmetic sentence. 34 + x = 61 asks them to read a letter as a number they do not know yet. The arithmetic is identical and the skill is not, which is why the two are separate pages.
