One-Step Equations Worksheets

Every problem on this sheet is an equation with one letter in it, solved by doing one thing to both sides: x + 7 = 12, c - 5 = 4, 3c = 24, m ÷ 5 = 3. All four operations appear unless you turn some off with the operator buttons, so a student has to look at each equation and decide what undoes it rather than repeating one move down the page.

The numbers are kept small on purpose. Solving is the new part; the arithmetic should not be. Every solution is a whole number and no step goes below zero. Raise Largest number once the method is secure - at 20 an equation like 12k = 204 is still one step, but the step is a two-digit division.

What is a one-step equation?

An equation you can solve with a single operation. x + 7 = 12 takes one subtraction; 3c = 24 takes one division. Two-step equations like 3c + 4 = 25 are seventh grade and are not generated here.

How do you solve one?

Do the opposite of whatever is being done to the letter, to both sides. The letter is being added to, so subtract; multiplied, so divide. The answer key states it as x = 5 rather than a bare 5, which is the form to get into the habit of writing.

What does 3c mean?

Three times c. Once letters arrive the multiplication sign is dropped, because x would be confusing next to a variable. Reading 3c as a multiplication is part of what these sheets are for, so they are written that way rather than as 3 × c.

Can I get a sheet of only one operation?

Yes. Untick the operators you do not want and the equations follow - multiplication alone gives a page of 3c = 24, which is the usual way to introduce them before mixing all four.
