Placement checks

6th Grade Math Placement Check

A one-click placement check for a child entering 6th grade. It samples the math a child should arrive with from 5th grade: 7 skills with two items each, four stories, and a fact finder that finds the level to start fact practice at.

It prints as ten pages: a note for the teacher, four pages for the child, the answers, and a last page, "Where to start", that says which page practises each skill a child missed. It is a screen, not a score: there is no pass mark and no grade level, and nothing is stored.

What this check covers

  • Answer two items on each of 7 skills from 5th grade
  • Solve four stories that make the operation a choice
  • Work one fact from each level of the multiplication and division ladder

Frequently asked questions

Why does the 6th grade check sample 5th grade math?

Because it is for a child entering 6th grade, and 5th grade is what that child should arrive with. A check of the grade's own math in September would test what has not been taught yet, and a teacher could not tell a gap from a lesson still to come.

What does "both wrong" mean on the 6th grade check?

Each of the 7 skills has two items. On this check, a child who misses both items under "Adding decimals" has math-pages.com/adding-decimals to practise; one missed is a watch, because two items cannot tell a slip from a gap. Give the child the first few problems on the practice page before you decide. A child who misses most of the check may need the one for the grade below.
