Placement checks

8th Grade Math Placement Check

A one-click placement check for a child entering 8th grade. It samples the math a child should arrive with from 7th grade: 8 skills with two items each, four stories, and a fact finder that finds the level to start fact practice at.

It prints as ten pages: a note for the teacher, four pages for the child, the answers, and a last page, "Where to start", that says which page practises each skill a child missed. It is a screen, not a score: there is no pass mark and no grade level, and nothing is stored.

What this check covers

  • Answer two items on each of 8 skills from 7th grade
  • Solve four stories that make the operation a choice
  • Work one fact from each level of the multiplication and division ladder

Frequently asked questions

Why does the 8th grade check sample 7th grade math?

Because it is for a child entering 8th grade, and 7th grade is what that child should arrive with: negative numbers, proportional relationships, percents of change and two-step equations. A check of 8th grade math in September would test what has not been taught yet.

What does "both wrong" mean on the 8th grade check?

Each of the 8 skills has two items. On this check, a child who misses both items under "Two-step equations" has math-pages.com/two-step-equations-worksheets to practise; one missed is a watch, because two items cannot tell a slip from a gap. Give the child the first few problems on the practice page before you decide. A child who misses most of the check may need the one for the grade below.

Why is there no probability on the 8th grade check?

Because a probability can be written as a fraction, a decimal or a percent, and the probability pages print a line that says which: a fraction in lowest terms. A check prints each skill as two items under its name, without that line, so its answers would be hard to mark. The probability pages on the 7th grade page are the way to check it.
