Division Word Problem Worksheets
Free printable division word problems: sharing stories that come out even, built on the 2 to 9 times tables. Eight to a page, with an answer key.
These are sharing stories. There are 24 apples to share equally among 6 friends, or 35 shells to sort into 5 buckets, and the question asks how many each one gets. Every problem comes out even, with nothing left over, so the student can put all their attention on what dividing means.
Each problem is a multiplication fact run backwards. The page opens on the 2 to 9 tables, so the largest is 81 shared among 9, and a student who knows 6 x 7 = 42 has a way to check 42 shared among 6. Sharing with 1 friend is left out, because it is not much of a story.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of division word problems are these?
Sharing stories: a total split into a known number of equal groups, asking how many are in each. They are the first kind of division most students meet, in third grade.
Do the problems have remainders?
No. Every problem on this page divides exactly. For stories with something left over, use the Long Division Word Problems page, which asks for the answer and the remainder.
Can I practise dividing by one number?
Yes. Under First number, press Clear and tick a single number such as 4, and every story on the sheet shares among 4.
What does the answer key show?
The number sentence under each story, such as 24 ÷ 6 = 4, so you can see the division the student should have found.
What grade are division word problems for?
Third grade, alongside the multiplication facts they undo, and fourth grade as a warm-up before long division.
