Multiplication Word Problem Worksheets
Free printable multiplication word problems about equal groups and rows: 6 boxes of 8 pencils, 4 rows of 7 chairs. Times tables 2 to 9 by default, with a key.
Every story is about equal groups: 6 boxes with 8 pencils in each, 4 rows of 7 chairs, 3 shelves holding 9 books. The student has to see that "each" means multiply, which is the step between knowing the times tables and being able to use them. About a quarter of the stories are rows, the array picture that area is built on later.
The page opens on the tables from 2 to 9, mixed. That leaves out the 1 times table, because 5 boxes with 1 pencil each is not much of a story, and the generator never puts a zero in a word problem at all. Tick 10, 11 and 12 to take the tables further, or tick a single number to spend a whole sheet on one table.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of multiplication word problems are these?
Equal-groups and array stories: a number of groups, the amount in each group, and a total to find. The answer key prints the number sentence, such as 6 x 8 = 48.
Can I practise one times table?
Yes. Under First number or Second number, press Clear and tick just the table you want, such as 7. Every story on the sheet will then use it.
Do the times tables go up to 12?
They can. Each number offers 0 to 12; the page starts with 2 to 9 ticked. Tick 10, 11 and 12 to include them.
What grade are multiplication word problems for?
Third grade, where multiplication is introduced as equal groups and arrays, and the start of fourth grade as a review of the facts.
How many problems fit on a page?
Eight by default, two across. Choose 2, 4 or 6 under Problems per page to leave more room for working or drawing the groups.
