Finding the Percent
Free printable worksheets on finding the percent. 15 is what percent of 60? Whole-number answers and an answer key.
Every question gives a part and a whole and asks for the percent: 15 is what percent of 60? The answer is 25%, because 15 is a quarter of 60. It is percent of a number turned round - the same three numbers, with a different one missing.
The answer is always one of eleven percents: 10, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 75, 80 or 90. Each is a fraction a student can see - a tenth, a fifth, a quarter, a half - which is how these are solved without a calculator. The whole is never larger than 100, and the part is always a whole number.

Frequently asked questions
How do you find what percent one number is of another?
Write it as a fraction, part over whole, and turn that into hundredths. 28 out of 40 is 28/40, which simplifies to 7/10, which is 70/100 - so 28 is 70% of 40.
Is this the same as percent of a number?
It is the same sentence with a different number missing. "What is 70% of 40?" asks for the 28; "28 is what percent of 40?" asks for the 70%. A student who can do one can check an answer with the other.
Why are the answers always the same few percents?
Each percent is paired with wholes it divides exactly - 20% with multiples of 5, 25% with multiples of 4 - so the part is always a whole number and the fraction it makes is one worth recognising. A question like "17 is what percent of 63?" needs a calculator, and that is a different lesson.
What grade is this?
Sixth grade, in the same unit as finding a percent of a number. Seventh grade builds on it with percent of change.
