Math Munch

Guide a hungry muncher around a grid and eat every square that fits the rule at the top of the screen. "Multiples of 7" means 21 and 56 are dinner and 22 is not. Munch a square that does not fit and you lose one of three lives, but the game tells you exactly why, so every mistake teaches something.

Choose the facts before you start. With multiplication, the rules change from level to level: multiples levels practise skip counting, factors levels ask which numbers divide into a target such as 24 or 36, and on "Makes" levels the squares are facts and you eat every one that equals the target, so 3 × 8 and 4 × 6 both make 24 while 5 × 5 does not. Choose addition, subtraction or division and the "Makes" levels use those facts too: with every operation chosen, 5 + 7, 15 − 3, 3 × 4 and 24 ÷ 2 all make 12.

Monsters wander onto the board after a few seconds and chase you, and getting caught costs a life too. For practice without the chase, choose calm mode and the board is yours alone. Play with the arrow keys and the space bar, or tap and use the buttons on a phone or tablet.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Math Munch?

Move one square at a time with the arrow keys, or tap a square next to your muncher. Press Space, or tap your own square, to eat the number you are on. Eat every number that fits the rule to finish the level. Eating one that does not fit costs a life.

What is the difference between multiples and factors?

A multiple of 6 is what you get when you multiply 6 by something: 6, 12, 18, 24. A factor of 24 is a number that divides into 24 exactly: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24. With multiplication or division chosen, the game has levels for both, and a wrong munch explains which is which.

Can I play with addition and subtraction?

Yes. Tap the buttons at the start to choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or any mix. Multiples and factors only make sense for multiplying and dividing, so with just addition or subtraction chosen every level is a "Makes" level: eat 6 + 8 and 9 + 5 when the target is 14, and leave 7 + 8.

Can I play without the monsters?

Yes. Choose calm mode at the start. The rules and levels are the same, with no monsters and no chase, so there is as much time to think as you need. Calm mode keeps its own best score.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap a square next to your muncher to step onto it, and tap your muncher to eat. There is also a set of arrow buttons and a Munch button under the board.
