Counting and comparing coins is first and second grade; adding and subtracting amounts in column format, which is what these sheets do, is usually second through fourth.

How do I keep the amounts small?

Set Amounts to Under $1 and every value stays inside the cents column, so nothing crosses the decimal point.

Do students need decimals before money worksheets?

No. Money is usually where decimals are first met. A student can treat $3.45 as 345 cents, do the arithmetic with whole numbers, and put the point back two places from the right. The decimal pages come later and use the same column layout.

Do the subtraction problems ever go negative?

No. Each pair is ordered so the larger amount is on top, and identical pairs are skipped.
