Percent Word Problems
Free printable percent word problems: sales tax, tips, discounts, markups and simple interest on one sheet, with answers to the cent.
Five kinds of everyday percent problem on one sheet: sales tax, tips, discounts, markups and simple interest. A $60.00 shirt with 6% tax costs $63.60; a $64.00 jacket at 25% off costs $48.00; $150 saved at 2% simple interest for 5 years earns $15.00.
The five are dealt as evenly as the page allows, so a 10-problem sheet has two of each. The student has to read each question to know whether the percentage is added on, taken off, or worked out on its own. Prices and savings are up to $200, and every answer is exact to the cent.

Frequently asked questions
Why mix the five?
On a page of only discounts, every answer is the price minus something, and the student stops reading. Mixed, they have to decide from the words: tax, tips and markups add the percentage on, a discount takes it off, and interest is the answer on its own.
Does anything need rounding?
No. Every price and rate is chosen together, so that the answer is a whole number of cents. Real receipts round, but rounding to the nearest cent is a separate skill, and these sheets never ask for it.
Can I print just one kind?
Yes. Change the question type to Tax and Tip, Discount and Markup, or Simple Interest. Each has its own page as well: the sales tax and tip, discount and markup, and simple interest worksheets.
What grade are percent word problems?
Seventh grade. Every kind on this sheet is named in the seventh-grade standard for multistep percent problems. Sixth grade finds a percentage of a number, without the money.
