Sales Tax and Tip Worksheets

Free printable sales tax and tip worksheets. Find the total cost to the cent: a $28.00 shirt with 6% tax costs $29.68. With an answer key.

Each question gives a price and a percentage and asks what you pay in total. A $28.00 shirt has 6% sales tax: 6% of $28.00 is $1.68, so the total cost is $29.68. A tip works the same way on a bill - a $36.40 meal with a 15% tip comes to $41.86.

Every page mixes tax and tip questions, as evenly as its count allows. Tax rates run from 3% to 10% in steps of half a percent, and tips are 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%. Prices are $25 to $100, and every answer comes out exactly to the cent, so nothing needs rounding.

Frequently asked questions

How do you work out sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate written as a decimal, then add the tax to the price. At 7.5%, a $44.00 game has $3.30 of tax (44 × 0.075), so the total cost is $47.30.

Is there a one-step way?

Yes. A price plus 6% tax is 106% of the price, so multiply by 1.06: $28.00 × 1.06 = $29.68. It is the same answer as finding the tax first and adding it on.

Why don't the prices end in 99 cents?

Because every answer is exact. $19.99 with 6% tax is $21.1894, which would have to be rounded, and rounding is a second skill the sheet does not set out to test. The prices are chosen so that the tax or tip is always a whole number of cents.

What grade is this?

Seventh grade, where percent problems move into tax, tips, markups and interest. Finding a percentage of a number on its own comes first, in sixth grade.
