Frequently asked questions

What is the trick for the 5 times table?

Halve the 10s fact. 5 x 8 is half of 10 x 8: half of 80 is 40. It works for every number, and it is quick once the 10s are known.

How does a clock help with the 5s?

The numbers on a clock face count the minutes in fives: the 3 is 15 minutes, the 7 is 35. Children who can read the time to five minutes have been practicing their 5s without noticing.

Why does 5 times an odd number end in 5?

Because 5 times an even number is a whole number of tens, and one more 5 on top leaves a 5 in the ones place. 5 x 6 is 30, so 5 x 7 is 30 + 5.
