Reading a Calendar Worksheets
Free printable reading a calendar worksheets: one real month and six questions read straight off it. Days of the week, dates and how many, with a key.
A first calendar sheet: one month of a real calendar, with the days of the week along the top and each date in its own box, and six questions about it. Nothing on the sheet counts days forward or back. Every question is read straight off the calendar.
There are three kinds of question: what day of the week a date is, which date is the first, second, third, fourth or last of a weekday, and how many of one weekday the month has, or how many days. Every sheet asks all three kinds, two of each. Most months have some weekdays four times and some five, so the counting questions have both answers.
The boxes before the 1st and after the last day are left empty, so every number on the calendar belongs to the month in the title. Pick a month in the settings to match the calendar on your classroom wall.
What this worksheet covers
- Name the day of the week a date falls on
- Find the first, second or last of a weekday in a month
- Count how many of a weekday are in a month

Frequently asked questions
What does a child need to know before reading a calendar?
The days of the week in order, and the numbers to 31. The sheet prints the days across the top of the calendar, Sunday first, so a child reads a date's weekday from the heading of its column.
How do you find how many Mondays are in a month?
Count the dates in the Monday column. A 28-day February has exactly four of every weekday. A month of 30 or 31 days has two or three weekdays that come five times: the ones its first two or three days fall on.
Why are some boxes on the calendar empty?
Those days belong to the month before or the month after. A month rarely starts on a Sunday, so the boxes before the 1st are blank, and so are the boxes after the last day.
What does the last Friday of a month mean?
The Friday with the biggest date. Read down the Friday column to its bottom date. In some months that is the fourth Friday and in others the fifth, which is why the sheet asks for the last one and not the fifth.
