Free printable telling time worksheets. Read analog clocks and draw the hands, to the quarter hour, with an answer key.

Analog clock faces with numbered hours and minute marks, asked both ways round: some clocks have hands to read and a line to write the time on, and some give the time and leave the face blank to draw on. Both matter - students who can read a clock often cannot draw one, which is the clearer test of whether they understand what the hands mean.

Times land on the quarter hour by default. The hour hand is drawn where it really sits rather than pointing straight at a number, so at 3:45 it is most of the way to the 4 - which is the thing that makes reading a real clock harder than reading a picture of one.

What age is telling time taught?

To the hour and half hour in first grade, to five minutes in second, and to the minute by third.

Can I get blank clocks to draw on?

Yes - choose Draw the Hands and every clock prints empty with the time written underneath. Mixed puts both kinds on one sheet.

Why is the hour hand not pointing at the number?

Because a real one does not. At 3:45 the hour hand is three quarters of the way from the 3 to the 4, and reading that correctly is most of the skill.
